The Throne ('Arsh) of Allāh being upon the water (Sūrah Hūd:7)

Question

I have a question regarding the arsh of Allah being above water in surah hud verse 7

Answer

Allāh Ta`ālā states in the Holy Qur’ān:

وَكَانَ عَرْشُهُ عَلَى الْمَآءِ

“And His `arsh was above the water” (Kanz al-‘Īmān. Sūrah al-Hūd, 7)

`Allāmah Sayyid Na`īm al-Dīn Murādābādī states in his tafsīr, Khazā’in al-`Irfān, regarding this verse from the Holy Qur’ān:

یعنی عرش کے نیچے پانی کے سوا اور کوئی مخلوق نہ تھی۔ اس سے یہ بھی معلوم ہوا کہ عرش اور پانی آسمانوں اور زمینوں کی پیدائش سے قبل پیدا فرمائے گئے۔

“Meaning, there was no creation below the `arsh except water. We also learn from this that the `arsh and water were created before the skies and lands.” (Khazā’in al-`Irfān, pg. 417)

Through the tafsīr of `Allāmah Sayyid Na`īm al-Dīn Murādabādī, we learn that the `arsh of Allāh Ta`ālā wasn’t directly upon the water, rather there was no creation present in between the `arsh and the water because the skies and the lands hadn’t been created yet, and Allāh knows best.
